TurboTax Online Review

By | February 19, 2015

TurboTaxWith tax season just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to review income tax software. While I’m all for bargain hunting, simply buying the software that’s on sale every year can lead to aggravation – not to mention you won’t be able to carry forward your personal information and deductions. So it’s important to choose a reliable product that you’ll be comfortable coming back to annually.

If you’re looking for tax software that’s straightforward and easy to use, look no further than TurboTax. There’s no coincidence TurboTax is Canada’s bestselling personal income tax software.

From the comfort of home, you can conveniently file your taxes online or from your Windows desktop. You can also choose between different versions of TurboTax to meet your specific needs, including Standard, Premier and Home & Business. Also, students and those with either low incomes or only income to claim will be able to file their taxes online for free. Finally, if you have an iPhone or iPad and a simple tax return, you can file your taxes from your mobile device by downloading the SnapTax app and snapping photos of your tax slips. It doesn’t get any easier than that!

This was my first time using TurboTax Online. I’m happy to say filing my taxes couldn’t have be any easier! Filing your own taxes can seem intimidating for the first time, but it doesn’t have to be. With TurboTax it’s a breeze! The intuitive tax software guides you along every step of the way.

After a quick and easy registration, you’re ready to start filing your tax return by answering a few basic questions. For example, you’ll need to provide your personal information, dependants’ information and marital status. The good news is once you fill out this information for the first time, you won’t need to complete it again; it will be waiting there for you next year. If you filed your tax return with TurboTax last year, you can even import your basic information.

After you’ve completed your basic information, it’s time to get started on your profile. Unlike other tax software where you have to pick and choose tax forms, TurboTax makes it easy by helping you choose the forms that are relevant to you. This is done by answering a few simple questions that are asked in plain language. After that it’s smooth sailing. You’ll just have to enter the information from your tax slips, which are conveniently organized into categories: income, RRSPs and deductions. If you missed any tax slips in the questionnaire, you’re able to choose them again within the categories.

There are a few additional features I simply love about TurboTax because they help to make your filing experience easier. While you’re completing your tax return, your tax refund is conveniently shown on the right. Also, the RRSP Optimizer lets you see the effect that purchasing additional RRSPs would have on your tax return. This is perfect for those thinking of a last minute RRSP contribution. Further, the 2014 tax year saw a number of changes and with the slew of tax credits and deductions out there, it’s easy to miss claiming one. TurboTax has you covered, though, and will suggest potential tax-saving opportunities to help you receive a larger tax refund. Not sure if you qualify for the new Family Tax Cut? TurboTax includes a tool to help make income splitting easy.

When you file your tax return with TurboTax, you’re never alone. If you have any questions, TurboTax offers free product help by phone, email or chat seven days a week during tax season. Those who purchase TurboTax Premier or Home & Business receive unlimited access to tax professionals via phone or chat for all of their tax questions.

What are you waiting for? Sign up for TurboTax this year and enjoy a quick and easy tax filing experience.
